It is coming to all of us, No matter what we do!!

So the silence ends today. After decades of trying to make the Watchmen graphic novel a film .It has finally reached the big screen. Now I am not going to explain the graphic novel to you as Biggeoff will do a better job of that. I am here to review the film, as a film and not an adaptation of the holy grail of comics. I will admit I am a fan of the graphic novel and I do see it as the defining moment when comics became graphic novels. It was such a huge read. You actually had to just sit alone after every chapter and just let it digest so now the same will be said of the movie.

Zach Snyder has put together a movie that is dense, complicated and thought provoking. It will be seen by some as a movie that will lose it’s audience and I thought this as well when I first left the film. But I need to grow up. I fell into the trap thinking that movie going audiences are still same people who have consistently made dumb movies profitable. Their not... I believe this movie will do well as the average move goer is smarter now, more refined and ready to take on the bigger films. They still want their movies action packed but also they want it thoughtful. Last year we witnessed this with the triumph of the Dark Knight and this year I believe that Watchmen will show that audiences are better equipped to grasp this type of film. Don’t misunderstand me though. It will not be a big as the Dark Knight was but I believe its overall effect on the films will be last just as long.

Let’s start breaking this behemoth down. It’s such a daunting task as there is so much packed into this film. Today I have gone through all footage on the net about the Watchmen just to get back in the film again and to better explain what I saw. The story is set in an alternate 1980?s America where Richard Nixon is still president and the tensions with Russia have almost escalated to the point of Nuclear War. In this world a team of masked vigilantes called the Watchmen once ruled the streets until the American government outlawed them, so they disbanded to either retire or go underground. The story starts years later when one of the old team is killed and it seems that someone is out to kill the vigilantes. That really is all you need to know about the plot to start with as Snyder does great in explaining the back plot visually at the opening credits with a amazing montage to Bob Dylan’s The Times they are a changing .The film mainly revolves around four characters from the sociopath slum detective Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) and the retired but ultimately bored Nite owl (Patrick Wilson) to the relationship problems of the Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and her Superpowered boyfriend Dr Manhattan (Billy Crudup).

This is an epic film in its storyline and its reach so you have to pay attention. Whatever you want in this film it will deliver as the action sequences are typical Snyder with top notch fight choreography mixed with slow motion hits and dramatic angles. It is also a love story and a psychological study of what makes man so violent and how it could change. That last one will have you leaving the theatre with a situation you will have think about for days to come. The scary thing is there is a lot of our world in this alternate one with its constant dangers and its malevolent governments but all is not bleak. Whoa this is so hard as I don’t want to scare anyone from the film because if you want to just have fun, this film has that appeal as well.

For example one of the biggest joys of the film is how much of an asshole the character of the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is. Long gone is the lovable rogue from TV and film. Here Jeffrey Dean Morgan is let loose to play around in the mud of his dark side. He truly is the one you just love to hate. Every time he is onscreen you are glued to him as you wonder what shitty thing he will do next and you hold your breathe until he’s onscreen again. He is the both theatrically and narratively the backbone of this film. Malin Akerman also stands out as the jaded superhero who just wants to be loved by the only character in the film that has actual superpowers Dr Manhattan. She also looks amazing in the outfit and in person. Her innocent face is deeply contrasted by her deadly almost heartless prowess. Jack Earle Haley as Rorschach is also the one that will truly scare you as the anti hero that investigates and moves the story along with his brutal style and Batmanesqe voice. He makes truth of the saying "Lucky he’s on our side?" As his psychotic demeanor and the way he dispatches some criminals make him the X factor of the film. Mathew Goode is …well good as Ozymandias as the role really doesn’t kick in until the end and he does well with what he is given. Billy Crudup is genuinely detached and creepy as the demigod Dr Manhattan and the amazing CGI make you actually feel his detachment from humanity.

What Zach Snyder has done here is take the world’s most unfilmable comic book, did "A Jackson "and made it filmable. I saw the posters for Watchmen with the phrase "From Visionary Director "and I must say I was skeptical as he had only done a couple of films beforehand but now I am assured that he is indicative of the future of films, where directors will have his CGI savvy and also the ability to tell an amazing story .His unique visual style is what makes this film possible. This isn’t like 300 where the film is basically a companion piece to the graphic novel, this is a film that will stand in its own right and considering it’s the Watchmen then that is quite an achievement. . The movie running time could have been shortened a bit in regards to it’s theatrical release but I think in the bigger scale of things the timing will end up perfect. The film will truly bloom for fans when we see this on DVD/ Blu ray with the Tales of the Black Freighter attached like The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.

Ultimately, Watchmen is a film that will sit proudly in your movie mind. Like the Graphic Novel did upon it’s release and its following years this film will confirm that this genre has matured. Biggeoff said this is a Vigilante Drama and I agree. It is more a Vigilante Drama than a superhero film and it will truly blow your mind.
